Our artists in residence have left the building and the 2024 Indigenous Art Intensive has concluded for another year.
For more than a decade the Indigenous Art Intensive has brought leading international and national Indigenous scholars, curators, artists and writers together at UBC Okanagan in Syilx territory.
From May 15 to June 12, 2024, UBC Okanagan Gallery continued our multi-year collaboration with the Indigenous Art Intensive to deliver an expanded program of fifteen visiting artists and scholars in residence. During this time, artists and presenters took part in exhibitions, art making, workshops, and course visits. This programming was offered to students, faculty, and the general public.
In 2024 the Indigenous Art Intensive program offered:
- 15 artists in residence who delivered presentations about their creative practices and created new artworks utilizing FCCS studio facilities
- 3 academic classes that ran during the Intensive instructed by Tania Willard, Stacey Koosel, and Allison Hargreaves
- 1 exhibition and accompanying reception event for Honky Tonk Chapel featuring the artwork of Kevin McKenzie and curated by Dr. Stacey Koosel
- 1 public workshop “Glitching Landscape Photography” facilitated by Sobey Art Award shortlist recipient Krystle Silverfox
- 2 student gallery assistants were hired this year to support the program with support from UBC Okanagan’s Work Study program
- A new online archive of keynotes, artists talks, and workshops available to the public on YouTube
