Join Tania Willard, UBC Okanagan Gallery Director and Associate Professor in Visual Arts, on Tuesday, September 23 to create and install a series of printed hummingbird flags in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Participants will create linocut prints of hummingbirds to honour the children (little spirits) who never came home and remember the unmarked graves at residential schools across Canada, as we continue to demand justice for Indigenous communities.
This marks the fourth and final year that UBC Okanagan Gallery is hosting the project in collaboration with the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC Okanagan.
“This project allows us to come together and observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation knowing we need to take action and continue to redress the injustice of these histories and the ways in which they continue to impact us.” states Tania Willard.
The flags produced at this year’s workshop will be added to the collection of previous year’s flags and installed in a circle at the courtyard on the UBC Okanagan campus. This large-scale installation of the flags will happen directly following the workshop on Tuesday, September 23 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the central courtyard on campus. The flags will be on display in the courtyard until Wednesday, October 1.
This workshop is offered free of charge and open to students, faculty and the general public. All materials will be provided and you do not have to attend the workshop to participate in the installation.
